Onshore Wind Ressource Assessment in France | La Météorologie – n° 98 – august 2017

As part of its mission to implement public policies, the Environment and Energy Management Agency, Ademe, has commissioned a study to map the wind resource in metropolitan France, Guadeloupe, Martinique and New Caledonia. The French numerical weather prediction model Arome has been used to generate hourly time series of wind speed at a horizontal resolution of 2.5 km. Data has then been processed through a fluid dynamic model, to downscale the results on complex topography terrains. This article describes the methodology used to produce this wind data at the small scale and to estimate the uncertainties of the results, which can readily be used to evaluate wind power resource or perform site studies.
